AVID stands for Advancement via Individual Determination. It is a
programme with the mission to close the achievement and opportunity gaps by preparing students for postsecondary education, skills development and workreadiness so they can participate in a global community as productive citizens.
- Year 6 students can apply for the AVID Enrichment class for the following year, when they are in Year 7. These students are capable in their studies and show individual determination to succeed.
- Students achieving average grades can apply for the AVID class in Year 7, with studies commencing in Year 8
- AVID Strategies classes continue as an elective in Years 9 and 10
- Students have a weekly tutorial session with Newcastle University student tutors
- Students attend career and university based excursions to open their eyes to possibilities for their future
- Career guest speakers are a feature of the programme
- Students follow the mainstream curriculum with a focus on Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organisation and Reading
