In NSW high schools, languages is a key learning area.
Language study allows students to develop communication skills, learn about languages as systems and explore the relationship between language and culture. Students engage with the linguistic and cultural diversity of societies and reflect on their understanding of social interactions.
Through interactive lessons, immersive activities and real-world applications, students develop their language proficiency while gaining insight into the customs and values of various communities. Glendale Technology High School emphasises the importance of language learning in today's interconnected world, preparing students for future academic pursuits and career opportunities.
- The study of a language is compulsory for 100 hours in one continuous school year from Year 7 to Year 10, but preferably in Years 7 or 8.
- In Stage 5, students may also elect a language course, depending on student interest and teachers specialities. Studying a language course in Stage 5 extends students' ability to communicate and strengthen their understanding of the nature of language, culture and the processes of communication.
- In Years 11 and 12, NSW schools offer a wide variety of languages, catering for beginning students to background speakers. Study options in Stage 6 include Distance Education through the NSW School of Languages.
