High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

Rich opportunities and activities

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

AVID

AVID stands for Advancement via Individual Determination. It is a
programme with the mission to close the achievement and opportunity gaps by preparing students for postsecondary education, skills development and work readiness so they can participate in a global community as productive citizens.

  • Year 6 students can apply for the AVID Enrichment class for the following year, when they are in Year 7. These students are capable in their studies and show individual determination to succeed.
  • Students achieving average grades can apply for the AVID class in Year 7, with studies commencing in Year 8
  • AVID Strategies classes continue as an elective in Years 9 and 10
  • Students have a weekly tutorial session with Newcastle University student tutors
  • Students attend career and university based excursions to open their eyes to possibilities for their future
  • Career guest speakers are a feature of the programme
  • Students follow the mainstream curriculum with a focus on Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organisation and Reading
Extension (GATS)

Curriculum strategies for academic students may include:

  • Differentiation: modifying the pace, level and content of teaching, learning and assessment activities
  • Assessing a student's current level of learning and addressing aspects of the curriculum that have not yet been mastered.

The Glendale Technology High School Extension programme offers students who are academically minded and or talented the chance to extend their learning in an environment with like minded students.

Students accepted into this programme will be encouraged to participate in a range of extra curricular activities such as cross curricular projects, external competitions and a passion project of their own design.

We encourage students to identify their own areas of strength and develop strategies to support them in areas of growth to develop a positive outlook of their learning and develop academic skills for success in senior school and beyond.
